"Call in a chit" có chit là giấy ghi nợ -> cụm từ này nghĩa là đòi nợ; đòi trả ân nghĩa cũ trước đây từng giúp (trước tôi giúp anh, giờ anh phải giúp tôi).
Ví dụ
Momentum is building for an epic U2 concert at Fenway Park, with the Red Sox voicing enthusiasm for Mayor Martin J. Walsh’s idea, and former Mayor Raymond L. Flynn agreeing to reach out to his old pal Bono and “call in a chit.”
The man, also a police officer, asked Jaswal to intervene and the deputy chief said he couldn’t. “At that point, (the man) advised that he was ‘calling in a chit,’ stating that ‘I have never shown the texts before’.”
But the very same day, Halleck made it clear that he was not above calling in a chit or two for his support on civil rights. He wrote Frederick Hovde, the president of Purdue University, the biggest educational institution in his district (quận), that he was lobbying the administration hard to put a new electronic research center for NASA on the university’s campus.
