Writing in the New York Post, John Tierney reiterates (nhắc lại) the truth that (sự thật là) “lockdown hysteria (cuồng loạn, kích động) did more harm than Covid-19.” A slice:

Why did so many go so wrong for so long? The elite (giới tinh hoa) panic  (hoảng loạn) was due to two preexisting pathologies (khoa nghiên cứu bệnh tật của cơ thể, bệnh (lý) học). The first is what I have called the Crisis Crisis, the incessant state of alarm (trạng thái báo động không ngừng) fomented (xúi bẩy, xúi giục; khích (mối bất hoà, sự phiến loạn, sự bất mãn...))  by journalists ("bọn" nhà báo) and politicians (chính trị gia). To keep audiences frightened (sợ hãi, hoảng sợ) around the clock (suốt ngày đêm), journalists seek out Cassandras with their own incentives for fearmongering (gieo rắc sợ hãi): politicians, bureaucrats, activists, academics and assorted experts who gain publicity, prestige, funding and power during a crisis.

The second pathology underlying the elite’s COVID panic is the politicization of research (chính trị hóa việc nghiên cứu khoa học) — what I have termed the left’s war on science, another long-standing problem that has gotten much worse. Just as the progressives (người cấp tiến, đảng viên đảng cấp tiến) a century ago yearned for a nation directed by “expert social engineers,” today’s progressives want sweeping new powers for politicians and bureaucrats who “believe in science,” meaning that they use the left’s version of science to justify (biện minh) their edicts (chỉ dụ).
