"You can’t get lard unless you boil the hog" = không luộc thịt sao có mỡ, hay "you can't make an omelet without breaking eggs" = không đập trứng sao có ốp-la mà ăn -> nghĩa là muốn làm được đại sự thì phải chịu tổn thất, thiệt hại; 'không xẻ ván sao đóng được thuyền'.
