During the COVID-19 pandemic (đại dịch), traditional (offline) chess tournaments (giải đấu) were prohibited (bị cấm) and instead held online. We exploit (khai thác) this unique (độc nhất vô nhị) setting to assess the impact (đánh giá tác động) of remote–work policies (chính sách làm việc từ xa) on the cognitive (liên quan đến nhận thức) performance of individuals. Using the artificial intelligence (trí tuệ nhân tạo) embodied in a powerful chess engine to assess the quality of chess moves (nước đi) and associated errors (lỗi), we find a statistically and economically significant decrease in performance when an individual competes remotely versus offline in a face-to-face setting. The effect size decreases over time, suggesting an adaptation to the new remote setting.
