A team of researchers (nhà nghiên cứu, nhà khoa học) from China, the U.K. and the U.S. has found that a species (loài) of darkling beetles (bọ cánh cứng) engage in oral sex (làm tình bằng miệng) prior to copulating (giao hợp). In their paper published in the journal Ecology (khoa nghiên cứu mối quan hệ của thực vật và các sinh vật sống với nhau với môi trường xung quanh; sinh thái học) and Evolution (tiến hóa), the group describes their study of the beetles and what they learned about their mating habits (thói quen giao phối).

As the researchers note, males giving females oral genital stimulation (kích thích bộ phận sinh dục ngoài bằng miệng) is rare in invertebrates (loài không xương sống, người nhu nhược). So they were surprised (ngạc nhiên) when they found male darkling desert beetles contacting and orally manipulating female genitalia multiple times prior to copulation.

The work by the researchers involved venturing to Mongolia to places where Platyope mongolica live—namely the region's deserts—to study their mating habits. The group collected multiple samples of both genders of the beetle during the mating season and brought them back to their lab (phòng thí nghiệm) for closer scrutiny (xem xét kỹ lưỡng) than would be possible in the wild (nơi hoang dã).
