Chống lạm phát là ưu tiến số một

Tổng thống Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ, Erdogan, đã cách chức người đứng đầu cơ quan thống kê sau khi cơ quan này công bố số liệu lạm phát cao kỷ lục.

Erdogan, vốn là một chủ doanh nghiệp, tin rằng lãi suất cao sẽ khiến chi phí sản xuất của doanh nghiệp cao hơn, và từ đó khiến giá cả hàng hóa cao hơn, gây lạm phát.

Chính vì thế, dù Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ đang có lạm phát rất cao, Erdogan vẫn kiên quyết chỉ đạo ngân hàng trung ương nước này giảm lãi suất. Những lãnh đạo của ngân hàng trung ương phản đối mệnh lệnh này đều đã bị cách chức.

Erdogan từng nói: "Lãi suất là nguyên nhân, lạm phát là hệ quả."

Câu này làm mình nhớ đến cụ Lê Duẩn từng nói: “Thiếu tiền thì in ra. Không sợ lạm phát. Tư bản mới lạm phát chứ ta chuyên chính vô sản thì sợ gì.”

Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, abruptly (bất ngờ, đột ngột; lấc cấc, xấc xược) fired (sa thải) the central bank chief on Saturday, dealing a new blow to the institution’s credibility while threatening to intensify the nation’s wrenching economic crisis.

The move, made in the early hours of the day by presidential decree, was the latest evidence of Mr. Erdogan’s unequivocal (không lập lờ, không mập mờ, rõ ràng) dedication to economic expansion at any cost.

He has long expressed irritation over Turkey’s elevated interest rates — currently at 24 percent — which make money harder to borrow, constraining the breakneck development that has been his hallmark.

Most economists assert that interest rates ought to be higher still, given the perilous (hiểm nghèo, hiểm họa) state of the Turkish economy and the weakness of its currency, the lira.

During the course of his 16-year tenure, Mr. Erdogan has pressured banks to lend aggressively in support of his signature infrastructure projects (dự án hạ tầng), including a grandiose (vĩ đại, hùng vĩ, lớn lao, đại quy mô) new Istanbul airport and a kingdom’s worth of high-rise towers. In recent years, international investors have grown spooked (làm hoảng sợ, kinh hãi) by the resulting debts, pulling their money out of the country and sending the lira plummeting (lao dốc).
