If Victorians were concerned (lưu tâm) with the “small morals” (luân lý, đạo đức, phẩm hạnh) of life – table manners (quy tắc bên bàn ăn), toilet habits (thói quen đi vệ sinh), conventions (tục lệ, lệ thường, quy ước) of dress, appearance, conversation, greeting, and all the other “decencies” of behavior – it was because they saw them as the harbingers (người/vật báo hiệu) of morals writ large, the civilities of private life that were the corollaries (hệ quả, hệ luận) of civilized social life.
