A Florida man’s mysterious (bí ẩn) abdominal pain (đau bụng) was the least of his doctors’ concerns after they discovered an 8-inch screwdriver (tuốc nơ vít) in his rectum (ruột thẳng, trực tràng).

The unnamed 46-year-old man had suffered (chịu đựng) a near-fatal (gần chí tử) punctured (đâm thủng, chích thủng) bowel, resulting in septic (nhiễm khuẩn, nhiễm trùng, gây thối) shock that sent him to ER, according to the case report published in the Annals of Medicine and Surgery.

It took a CT scan to find out what was responsible for his symptoms, including pain through his abdomen (bụng) and pelvis (xương chậu, háng), his doctors from the Kendall Regional Medical Center in Miami wrote.

Sepsis had decayed (thối rữa) part of the man’s buttocks (mông), which had to be removed to eliminate (xóa bỏ) the source of the infection (nhiễm trùng). His medical records showed a history of mental illness, including schizophrenia (tâm thần phân liệt) and bipolar disorder (rối loạn cảm xúc lưỡng cực). The man reportedly failed to take his medication, the report said. He was later treated for psychiatric (tâm lý) distress (trình trạng kiệt sức/mệt lả).

After X-rays revealed the foreign object, the man was immediately administered antibiotics and rushed to the operating room where doctors attempted to remove the screwdriver without surgery.
