A single payer should reduce the cost of billing and overhead, so the entire system works more efficiently, saving millions if not billions a year. No one should pay a premium. The system should be funded out of general federal revenue. If taxes must be raised to cover the cost, tax the wealthy and corporations (tập đoàn). Obviously the details would have to be fleshed out. But Medicare for all sounds more like a huge headache than a solution.

The largely unnoticed rural election result affirmed support for nationalizing and expanding health insurance (bảo hiểm y tế), a program popularly known as Medicare for All. While the national media discourse (diễn thuyết) about the election largely ignored health care issues beyond abortion (phá thai) rights, voters across the country registered support for progressive reforms focused on improving health care access and reining in the for-profit industries that dominate the medical system.

In early 2019, 56 percent of Americans said they favored Medicare for All, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation survey. But when told that it would abolish (hủy bỏ) private coverage (đưa tin tức), only 37 percent approved. When told that a single-payer system would also require tax increases for most Americans, a similar drop-off in support occurred. And when patients learned that Medicare for All would cause treatment delays — as all government-run healthcare systems (hệ thống chăm sóc sức khỏe) invariably do — support fell to just 26 percent. Some liberals (đảng viên tự do) may continue to press for a government-run health care program, but the facts are that most Americans like the current system.
