From chess, to conkers, to fishing – it appears no contest these days is safe from accusations of cheating and being shrouded in controversy (gây tranh cãi).

And New Zealand’s annual ‘bird of the year’ competition is no exception (không ngoại lệ). One particular bird – and a national favourite – has been suspiciously absent from this year’s nominees, to the outrage (sự tức giận) of many.

The kākāpō is the heaviest species of parrot in the world, is nocturnal, and has a cute face like an owl yet cannot fly. It lives until around 90 years old and may also have the longest life expectancy of all birds globally.

It is critically endangered and escaped extinction after conservation work helped raise its population from 50 in the 1990s to more than 250 today.

‘You know, if the same bird keeps winning every year, that might make it not so interesting.’
