A potential agreement (thỏa thuận) between China and five Southeast Asian (Đông Nam Á) countries to share real-time data (dữ liệu thời gian thực) about the flows (dòng chảy) of the Mekong River is a positive development, which will help address global climate change and the risk of droughts (hạn hán) and floods, a senior official (quan chức cấp cao) from the inter-governmental Mekong River Commission (Ủy hội Sông MeKong Quốc tế) told.
Making sure there is “effective near real-time sharing of storage levels and hydropower (thủy năng) operations data” is one of the short-term recommendations of a Phase I report jointly published by the Lancang-Mekong Water Resources Cooperation Center (Trung tâm Hợp tác Thủy lợi Lancang-Mekong) and the Mekong River Commission on Oct. 5.
The Mekong River Commission is made up of representatives (đại diện) from four of the five countries the Mekong flows through after leaving China: Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Meanwhile, the Lancang-Mekong Water Resources Cooperation Center, based in Beijing, was established on the back of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation initiated (sáng kiến) by China in 2014.
