What happened at OpenAI over the past five days could be described in many ways: A juicy (hấp dẫn) boardroom drama (kịch tính phòng họp), a tug of war (giằng co) over one of America’s biggest start-ups, a clash (đụng độ) between those who want A.I. to progress faster and those who want to slow it down.

But it was, most importantly, a fight between two dueling visions (hai tầm nhìn đấu tay đôi) of artificial intelligence (trí tuệ nhân tạo).

In one vision, A.I. is a transformative (biến đổi) new tool, the latest in a line of world-changing innovations (cải tiến thay đổi thế giới) that includes the steam engine (động cơ hơi nước), electricity (điện) and the personal computer (máy tính cá nhân), and that, if put to the right uses, could usher in (mở ra) a new era of prosperity (kỷ nguyên thịnh vượng mới) and make gobs (rất nhiều) of money for the businesses that harness its potential (khai thác tiềm năng).

In another vision, A.I. is something closer to an alien (ngoài hành tinh) life form — a leviathan (thủy quái, quái vật khổng lồ) being summoned (triệu hồi) from the mathematical depths of neural networks (mạng lưới thần kinh) — that must be restrained (hạn chế) and deployed with extreme caution in order to prevent it from taking over and killing us all (giết chết tất cả chúng ta).

With the return of Sam Altman on Tuesday to OpenAI, the company whose board fired him as chief executive last Friday, the battle (cuộc chiến) between these two views appears to be over.
