Thanh niên thực hiện chuyến đi 3.000 dặm cùng chú sóc cưng - nhưng có lẽ phải chia tay ở biên giới Mỹ

A man fled (trốn khỏi) Venezuela and made a 3,000-mile journey with his pet squirrel but now faces having to say goodbye to his furry friend as it is unlikely (không chắc) the animal will be allowed to enter the United States.

Yeison, 23, is among millions of Venezuelans who have fled their country due to political (chính trị) and economical (kinh tế) upheaval (biến động). After escaping with his pet, he spent months living in a tent in Mexico while waiting to make an asylum case (xin tị nạn, trường hợp tị nạn) in the US.

The little squirrel, who has a black stripe (sọc đen) and flecks of white hair (đốm lông trắng), made the long journey through the perilous (nguy hiểm) jungle known as Darien Gap nesting in a knitted cap (mũ đan, mũ dệt kim) inside his guardian's (người giám hộ) backpack. Yeison said he never considered leaving Venezuela without his squirrel, Niko, as being alone "would practically (thực tế) be like starting with nothing".

Yeison, who did not share his surname as he is worried about his family's safety in Venezuela, said that when a bus driver discovered the squirrel, he sold his phone for $35 (£28) to pay to keep him on board. The pair now live together in a tent in Matamoros, across from the Texas border city of Brownsville.

The young man has secured an appointment (cuộc hẹn) to present himself at the US border and request asylum. While the chances of Niko being allowed in the country are slim, volunteers at the camping site still have hope.
