"Wake-up call" nghĩa là gì?

Wake-up call là một cú điện thoại mà bạn dặn khách sạn gọi để đánh thức bạn dậy vào buổi sáng. Thành ngữ này còn có nghĩa là một hành động hay một lời cảnh báo khiến mọi người phải lập tức chú ý đến một vấn đề.
Ví dụ
“I’m usually at my desk on time. But some of my colleagues have been more than a little late from time to time. The boss must have noticed too. He recently sent out an email reminding everyone of our office hours. That was a WAKE-UP CALL that cautioned my co-workers that he wouldn’t tolerate tardiness (nạn đi trễ). So far, it’s worked.”
“Most scientists have concluded that global warming is a real threat. They warn that more and more dramatic changes in weather are taking place. And we’re losing various species of plants and animals as a result. It’s a wake-up call (lời cảnh tỉnh) to the planet. We must act now or it will threaten our way of life.”
