Also-ran nghĩa là gì?

Also-ran có một gạch nối giữa also và ran, động từ to run, nghĩa là chạy hay tham dự một cuộc đua. Also-ran được dùng như một danh từ, xuất xứ từ những con ngựa chạy đua nhưng không thắng. Ngày nay also-ran có nghĩa là một người bị thua sau khi tranh cử, hay một công ty bị thất bại sau một cuộc cạnh tranh.
Ví dụ:
“If you ask many Americans who the last five U.S. Presidents have been, they could probably name them. But despite significant news coverage during those elections, few voters could identify the candidates who were defeated. Then again (nói cho cùng), the also-rans (những người thất cử này) might prefer not to be remembered (không muốn được người ta nhớ tên).”
“I’m looking forward to buying an e-book reader. At first, I was drawn to the company which produced the very first model. Then I became interested in more popular competitors which have developed a wide range of applications. They’re beginning to make their early rival look like an also-ran. Its share of the market continues to decrease.”
