'Beside oneself' là không tự kiềm chế được, không tự chủ được, quýnh lên vì sợ hãi, lo lắng, giận dữ, vui mừng, v.v.

Ví dụ

“Hearing that (hay tin) we had just won the lottery was so overwhelming (xúc động nghẹn lời). We were beside ourselves (không kiềm chế được nữa). Just think: we’d become millionaires. Now we could pay off our mortgage (nợ mua nhà) and put our kids through college. And there would be enough money left to travel around the world.”

“One of my neighbors was driving home the other night. It was raining really hard. Just as he was turning into his driveway, he accidentally hit a kid who was running along the sidewalk. You can imagine (hình dung) that he was beside himself with grief (dằn vặt khổ tâm) for not seeing him. Fortunately, the kid only sustained a few bumps (cục u) and bruises (vết bầm).”
