My husband and I certainly got our wires crossed the other night. When we talked about having a guest (người khách) over for dinner, he thought I understood that he planned to invite his boss. But I thought he meant my brother. The reason we got so confused (lầm lẫn) is that both people are named Terry!

It’s only recently that the original (nguyên thủy, đầu tiên) settlers (người định cư) of the U.S. have been called Native (bản xứ) Americans. That’s because in 1492, Columbus thought he arrived in India. But he got his wires crossed; he really landed in the New World. This explains why, for centuries, the people he met were mistakenly referred to as “Indians”.
