'Take the wind out of one’s sails' có một từ mới là sail, nghĩa là cánh buồm (lấy gió khỏi buồm của ai đó). Thành ngữ này có nghĩa là lấy mất quyền lợi hay lợi thế của một người khiến người đó mất tin tưởng hay nhụt chí khí.

Ví dụ:
Ben assumed (cho rằng) that he’d be elected as the next mayor after serving as assistant mayor (phụ tá thị trưởng) and receiving endorsements (ủng hộ) from top politicians (chính trị gia hàng đầu). But soon it became clear the voters preferred (thích hơn) his opponent instead. The results really took the wind out of his sails (mất cả tin tưởng).

“I LOVE LUCY” is a classic (bất hủ) TV comedy (hài kịch) from the 1950s. It almost didn’t air (trình chiếu) because of objections (chống đối) by network execs. Fortunately, the show’s stars weren’t about to let anyone take the wind out of their sails. They started their own studio (mở xưởng phim), took control of the production (tự sản xuất lấy), and went on to make broadcast history (làm nên lịch sử truyền hình).
