"By a hair" nghĩa là gì?

Let's Read! Let's Move! with LeVar Burton, Miss America and LaVar Arrington 07182012. Photo courtesy US Department of Education.

'By a hair' có nghĩa là cách nhau bằng một đường tơ kẽ tóc, chỉ một chút xíu.

Ví dụ
“Young women from across the United States were judged on their looks, talent, grace (vẻ duyên dáng) and intelligence. In the end, it was determined that the representative from Nebraska had earned just a few more points than her fellow contestants (thí sinh, đối thủ). Having won by a hair (thắng sát nút), she was crowned the new Miss America.”

“The bus driver should have been more careful (thận trọng). He was going too fast. When he was turning the corner, my friend and I were crossing (băng qua) the street. If we hadn’t jumped to the sidewalk (lề đường), we would have been hit. It was incredibly close (hết sức gần). The driver missed us by a hair (xíu nữa).”

Only in a quiet mind

Only in quiet waters do things mirror themselves undistorted.
Only in a quiet mind is adequate perception of the world.

Purple and violet sunset colors of the sky above several barren spring tree silhouettes reflected into the calm waters of the Mogosoaia lake.
