"Strike out" nghĩa là gì?

Trong môn bóng chày ở Mỹ, khi vận động viên đánh hụt quả bóng ba lần thì trọng tài gọi đó là một strike out, tức là vận động viên đó bị thua. Vì thế, strike out còn có nghĩa là bị thất bại.
Ví dụ
Since I no longer need my old car, I put an ad in the newspaper (đăng báo) to sell it. I thought it would be easy to find a buyer. But, so far, not one person has called. I’ve really struck out.
For many years Cher was known only as a singer. When she first acted in films, critics expected her to fail completely. But she didn’t strike out. She became a big star and even won an Oscar for “Best Actress”.
