"Song and dance" nghĩa là gì?

'Song and dance' có một từ mới là dance nghĩa là nhảy múa. Song and dance được dùng để chỉ một câu chuyện hay một kế hoạch tỉ mỉ để giải thích hay biện hộ cho một điều gì, hay để đánh lừa người khác. Thành ngữ này xuất xứ từ những màn hát và nhảy múa rất được dân chúng Mỹ ưa chuộng vào cuối thế kỷ thứ 19.
Ví dụ
My son made bad grades and I gave him my standard 'song and dance' about how he won't get into a good college unless he does better.
We know that Scott was out at a party until three o’clock this morning. But when he finally came to the office, almost two hours late, he told us this exaggerated story (câu chuyện phóng đại) about his alarm not going off, and then his car running out of gas. But his song and dance didn’t fool (đánh lừa) anyone.
The landlord (chủ nhà cho thuê) showed me a really nice appartment for rent. But when my husband stopped by to see it a little while later, he gave us a song and dance (tạo ra một lý do nào đó) about why it was no longer available (không còn trống để cho thuê nữa). His elaborate excuse (cái cớ) wasn’t at all believable. He probably didn’t want to rent to a biracial (khác nhau về chủng tộc) couple like us.
