'Make a pitch for' có từ pitch là lời rao hàng, ném, liệng; và do đó cụm từ này có nghĩa là thuyết phục mọi người ủng hộ bạn hay cho bạn điều gì (to try to persuade people to support you or give you something). Cụm từ này ban đầu ám chỉ những lời rao hàng thổi phồng được "pitched" (trong nghĩa ném) về phía người nghe.

Ví dụ
The union made a pitch for a reduction in working hours.

The Prime Minister and Chancellor George Osborne’s battle bus rolled into the region as the pair made a pitch for another term in office.

At a Wednesday meeting in downtown Mariupol, Peter Andrushchenko, one of the Together’s leaders, made a pitch for investing in the city’s long-term success: “We are investing in our future. If we invest one Hryvnia today, one day it will be worth 10.”

Given the importance of the legislation, I thought it would be worthwhile to allow them a little extra time for the bill to pass. Apparently, Harry Reid did not. If Ted Kennedy couldn’t persuade the majority leader of his own party, my odds were not good. I made my pitch, but it was too late.
