'Middle ground' có từ middle là ở giữa và ground nền tảng, lý do, căn cứ; và do đó cụm từ này có nghĩa là phạm vi thỏa hiệp (an area of compromise or possible agreement between two extreme positions, especially political ones).

Ví dụ
There is a middle ground that would put the finances of the federal government on reasonably solid footing pending entitlement reform.

Jeb Bush tries to find middle ground in the 'religious freedom' law controversy.

“Some in this country argue that the solution is to deport (trục xuất) every illegal immigrant, and that any proposal short of this amounts to amnesty,” I said. “I disagree... There is a rational middle ground between granting an automatic path to citizenship for every illegal immigrant and a pro- gram of mass deportation.”

Is there really such a thing as middle ground in moral battles? Perhaps part of the reason we are where we are is because Christians have given in to (nhường bước trước) middle ground on so many clearly Biblical issues. It is easier and less costly to compromise in middle ground than it is to learn how to stand firm with genuine Grace or with God led judgment (i.e. Judges). What is considered middle ground seems to always move farther and farther away from the Holy heart of God.
