"At odds with" nghĩa là gì?

'At odds with' có từ odds là sự xung đột, mối bất hòa; vì thế cụm từ này nghĩa là xung đột với (ai đó) (in conflict, at variance, in disagreement, on bad terms, at cross purposes, at loggerheads, quarreling, arguing, on the outs, at daggers drawn, at each other's throats).

Ví dụ
Big-name market debuts at odds with thin IPO pipeline.

De Blasio pal at odds with Jewish legislator over Palestinian ‘courage’ tweet.

Union still at odds with city over contract and severance package.

But unlike the Holy Roman Empire (for most of its history, at least), the EU struggles to resolve its internal tensions in the quest for the principles and goals by which it is guided. In the process, it pursues monetary union side by side with fiscal dispersion and bureaucracy at odds with democracy.

"In a sense" nghĩa là gì?

'In a sense' thường được dùng để chỉ sự diễn giải cụ thể một tình huống nào đó, nghĩa là theo lời giải thích hay quan điểm, ở khía cạnh nào đó (according to one explanation or view; to a certain extent).

Ví dụ
In a sense it may have been the only possible solution.

In a sense, Skaggs is a living bridge between the past and the present — and the future: Skaggs now returns the mentoring favor for younger performers like Chris Thile, Alison Krauss and Mountain Heart.

Despite being the most resource-rich states in the federation, we are in a sense smitten by the so-called 'resource curse' (lời nguyền tài nguyên), with widespread feelings that most of our resources have been used for developing Malaya, which outstripped us in development by leaps and bounds.

The conquerors were significantly assimilated (đồng hóa) by the defeated Chinese society, to a point where substantial parts of their home territory came to be treated as traditionally Chinese. China had not sought to export its political system; rather, it had seen others come to it. In that sense, it has expanded not by conquest but by osmosis (sự thẩm thấu).

The new structure represented in some sense a renunciation (từ bỏ) of Westphalia. Yet the EU can also be interpreted as Europe’s return to the Westphalian international state system that it created, spread across the globe, defended, and exemplified (là ví dụ điển hình) through much of the modern age — this time as a regional, not a national, power, as a new unit in a now global version of the Westphalian system.
