'Slash-and-burn' nghĩa là hùng hổ, hung hăng, tàn nhẫn (aggressive and merciless), ngoài ra còn có nghĩa là đốt nương làm rẫy (of, relating to, or denoting a method of agriculture in which existing vegetation is cut down and burned off before new seeds are sown, typically used as a method for clearing forest land for farming).

Ví dụ
In bid to cut haze, Indonesia persuades farmers against slash-and-burn.

Slash-and-burn protests and quixotic ideological crusades are luxuries they can't afford.

It is a saga of incredible cunning, as when J. P. Morgan Sr., the founder's son, learned to control American companies around the turn of the century by creating and dominating groups of their bondholders, or when, eight decades later, the three Morgan firms all learned to play the tough, slash-and-burn takeover game better than anyone else.

The subject of George Soros, born Schwartz György, the super-wealthy slash-and-burn speculator and Jewish-Hungarian expatriate (người xa xứ, người định cư ở nước ngoài), is one always revealing new facets. Soros’s adventures in “nation-building” and “democratic revolution” are the left half of internationalist vise grips, set in so-called opposition to the “rightwing,” Trotskyite, neoconservative war hawks (diều hâu).
