'Storming column' có từ storm (động từ) là đột chiếm và từ column là cột trụ (đoàn binh), vì thế cụm từ này nghĩa là đội quân xung kích.

Ví dụ
The 54th coloured Massachusetts regiment held the right of the storming column that attacked Fort Wagner on the 18th of July last. It went into action 650 strong, and came out with a loss of a third of the men, and still a larger proportion of officers.

In Christopher Hibbert's book, “Wellington: A Personal History,” the biographer wrote: “The assault was launched on the dark night of 6 April and, as some thought at Cuidad Rodrigo, Wellington launched it too soon. The first storming column struggled to clamber up the slopes and across the imperfect breaches, treading on to the sharp spikes of caltrops (chông sắt có 4 mũi) and planks (tấm ván) studded with the points of nails (đinh sắt nhọn), being blown apart by mines (mìn), mutilated (tổn thương, què cụt) by shells (đạn súng cối) and grenades (lựu đạn), burned by fire-balls (đạn lửa) and knocked over by powder barrels, coming up against the chevaux-de-frise (chướng ngại vật làm bằng dây kẽm gai hoặc hợp bởi nhiều cọc cắm vào một khung gỗ, giăng ở chỗ tối để gạt ngã ngựa của kẻ địch, dây cản ngựa) made from Spanish sword blades, carrying scaling ladders, many of which proved too short, taunted by the shouts of French troops on the walls and with the piercing sound of their own bugles ringing in their ears.”
