"Butcher's bill" nghĩa là gì?

'Butcher's bill' có từ butcher là người bán thịt, tên đồ tể, vì thế từ này nghĩa là danh sách người chết trong chiến tranh, đôi khi được dùng để chỉ số thương vong (người dân thường) trong một thảm họa lớn (a count of soldier casualties after a battle, sometimes used for civilians after a large disater).

Ví dụ
The Civil War resulted in more than 620,000 military deaths, more than the combined “butcher’s bill” to Americans in World War I and World War II combined.

Each month UNSMIL makes the point that its butcher’s bill of slain civilians does not include those killed or maimed as a direct result of hostilities. It does not include those who have been executed after capture or who died after being abducted or as a result of torture.

It was the Western Allies' extreme good fortune that the Russians, and not themselves, paid almost the entire 'butcher's bill' for [defeating Nazi Germany], accepting 95 per cent of the military casualties of the three major powers of the Grand Alliance.
