'Dower chest' có từ dower = của hồi môn, chest = rương, hòm, két -> từ này nghĩa là tráp đựng của hồi môn.
A storied and lavishly (phung phí, hoang tàng) decorated Lancaster County, Penn., dower chest was a standout (cái xuất sắc, nổi bật) at Pook & Pook’s Americana auction (bán đấu giá) Saturday, October 8, selling during a three-session sale for $90,000, plus the buyer’s premium, for a total of $108,000. Antiques (đồ cổ) dealer (người buôn bán, người chia bài) and show manager Diana Bittel was the determined bidder, beating out competition from a phone bidder to acquire it for a young collector in Texas.
Our Christian faith can also be seen readily in PA Dutch folk art manuscripts, which proclaimed their steadfast love of Christian folkways in Fraktur birth certificates and dower chests decorated in Germanic motifs that can escalate to $100,000 or more at current public art auctions.
Sometimes these early 18th and 19th Century folk art decorated frakturs were made several years after the child was born, as a memento (vật kỷ niệm, lưu niệm) of love and compassion (lòng thương, lòng trắc ẩn) paid for by their parents; a keepsake (vật lưu niệm) item which was often pasted under the lid of the child’s dower chest.
