'The mother country'  nghĩa là đất nước nơi bạn sinh ra, quê hương; đất mẹ.

Ví dụ
Widely regarded as one of the best spots for Russian cuisine (ẩm thực) outside the mother country, Kachka (tên một nhà hàng ở Portland) split (chia ra)  in two last year, with the main restaurant moving to bigger digs a few blocks away and leaving its cheaper, louder, more casual sister to fill the old location. Both are participating in Portland Dining Month, the latter focusing on Belarusian pork belly (sườn heo) machanka (tên một món ăn), the former grilled quail (chim cút) with lentils (đậu lăng).

During this period, the quality of wheat (lúa mì) deteriorated (bị hỏng) due to lack of information (thiếu thông tin) on both farming and storage as well as funding. Whites in colonial Rhodesia still hooked (gắn với) to the mother country, preferred blending local wheat and imported brands to have "quality" bread. However, the desire to improve the quality of wheat grown was rather lukewarm (dửng dưng).

The image of the British Colonies (thuộc địa) of North America, published in c.1860, has an inset (ghép vào) of Newfoundland, perhaps reflecting the importance of the whaling (nghề đánh cá voi) and fishing industry to the mother country.
