'Between the devil and the deep blue sea' = đứng giữa một bên là 'yêu quái' và một bên là biển sâu -> một tình cảnh 'tiến thoái lưỡng nan' mà chọn bên nào cũng đầy nguy hiểm.

Ví dụ
Likening the registrar’s (cán bộ hành chính, lưu trữ số liệu) position to being between the devil and deep blue sea, SSANU held that it was hypocritical (đạo đức giả) and insensitive (thiếu nhạy bén) for the ASUU Chairman to strongly lambast (khiển trách) the registrar for carrying out his lawful duties (trách nhiệm).

In this situation, the government is clearly in between the devil and the deep blue sea. It is however, left for it to either choose dashing these service providers money for doing next to nothing or take the bull by the horn (không sợ khó khăn) and do all the needful to ensure that Nigeria realizes the expected power supply in the next four years. Nigeria must not remain in perpetual (mãi mãi) darkness arising from the incompetence (thiếu trình độ) and greediness (tham lam) of unqualified service providers!

“It was the storm (cơn bão) and the wrong decision (quyết định),” Lerro told a Los Angeles Times reporter after the incident (tai nạn). “The radar was out, the visuals (thiết bị nhìn) were out. I ought to have put the ship aground (mắc cạn). I was between the devil and the deep blue sea. That’s what I have to live with now.”

Pyne, on radio, counselled (khuyên) that preference (sự thiên vị) considerations in the Senate (Thượng viện) were “often a choice between the devil and the deep blue sea”
