"Drop the ball" nghĩa là gì?

"Drop the ball" = đánh rơi bóng. Trong các môn thể thao như quần vợt, khi vận động viên làm rơi quả bóng thì sẽ phạm lỗi và mất điểm. Vì thế, thành ngữ này có nghĩa là phạm phải một lỗi lầm nào đó hoặc bỏ lỡ một thứ gì đó, thường là do bất cẩn.

Timmy dropped the ball on doing this task again because of his carelessness. I can’t stand him anymore.
New professionals (chuyên gia) are told to "network" (giao thiệp) with no real concept of what that means, and they have the ability to ping (biết được) any number of prospective contacts through email, social media, etc. I'm glad to meet with people for whom I could be an actual resource, but I have no interest in wasting my time. My recent policy has been to intentionally (cố tình) "drop the ball" in email exchanges to see if the other person re-initiates contact.
But Toy Story 3 (the series offering that my sister not inaccurately (không chính xác) refers to as “the Holocaust (thiêu hàng loạt) one”) wrapped up the adventures of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and the rest of the ambulatory-plaything gang (băng nhóm) with tremendous wit and an earned sense of finality (kết thúc), and did so while also implying that the toys' adventures would never really end. (At least, not as long as there were new children eager to play.) The film was terrific on its own, and even better as the final segment in a presumed trilogy, given that despite our sky-high expectations (kỳ vọng), it didn't drop the ball.
