"Hope for the best, prepare for the worst" =  hy vọng vào điều tuyệt vời, chuẩn bị cho điều tồi tệ -> chúng ta nên có một thái độ tích cực nhưng cũng phải chú ý và lên tinh thần cho những điều tồi tệ.

Ví dụ
The recent earthquakes (động đất) that hit Kern County are a stark (khắc nghiệt) reminder that though we hope for the best, we should be prepared for the worst.

"We'll have people in different locations and watching," spokesperson (phát ngôn viên) Sgt. Eduardo Delgado told the Post. "We prepare for the worst and hope for the best."

“Hope for the best, prepare for the worst,” says Jenni “JWoww” Farley. When Sorrentino, 37, arrives at the courthouse (tòa án) with his then-fiancée (vị hôn thê) Lauren Pesce (they got married a month later), he does his best to put on a brave face — but he can’t quite squash (nén) his nerves (can đảm).

Just as a forecaster (dự báo) announces an impending storm (cơn bão đang đe dọa), we have no idea of the complete devastation (tàn phá) that the storm will leave. We know its tendencies (xu hướng) based on previous storms, but no two storms are exactly alike. Therefore, we must prepare for the worst, but hope for the best.
