"Keep up with the Joneses" nghĩa là gì?

"Keep up with the Joneses" = bắt kịp Joneses -> luôn muốn mình theo kịp "nhà người ta", nhà người ta có gì mình cũng phải có cái đó. Cụm từ này xuất phát từ truyện tranh cùng tên của Pop’ trên tờ New York Globe (1923) và Jone cũng là họ phổ biến ở Anh, được sử dụng chung khi nói về hàng xóm/ "nhà người ta".
Ví dụ
Not everyone, of course. Only those who can afford it (đủ khả năng chi trả), plus those who are trying to keep up with the Joneses, whether they can afford it or not. That’s still a lot of people.
A new survey (khảo sát) by Wilsonart, a home goods manufacturer (nhà sản xuất hàng gia dụng), shows a third of home improvement projects (dự án cải tạo nhà) are started to keep up with a friend, family or neighbor. The average amount spent to keep up with the Joneses is about $3,500.
As I mentioned briefly in a previous column, the old idea of “keeping up with the Joneses” has reached an entirely new dimension (chiều hướng mới) today. Now it’s FOMO—fear of missing out (sợ bị bỏ lỡ)—on all the fabulous things other people appear to be doing, buying and enjoying.
