"Make ends meet" nghĩa là gì?

"Make (both) ends meet" có từ "ends" chỉ sự bắt đầu và kết thúc của một năm -> có đủ tiền để trang trải cho một năm. Cụm từ này dùng để chỉ những người có thể kiếm đủ tiền để sống, không mắc nợ, hay là cân đối được số thu và số chi. Ta hay nói vui là (làm việc chỉ đủ để) "vắt mũi bỏ mồm".

Since they had their baby, they’ve been finding it really hard to make ends meet so I lent (cho mượn) them some money.
One frequent criticism (chỉ trích) of the U.S. school system, particularly (cụ thể) public schools, is that teachers are paid less than people in many other professions. New research shows some teachers cannot make ends meet financially. One in six has to take a second job to balance their personal books.
