"Spanner" = "Wrench" = cái cờ lê. "Throw a spanner in the works" hay "Throw a wrench in the works" = ném cờ lê vào đồ có giá trị -> ý chỉ hành vi phá hoại, làm hỏng, cản trở kế hoạch, tiến trình công việc của người khác. Cụm "a spanner in the works" cũng có thể được dùng riêng để chỉ những khó khăn, chướng ngại khi thực hiện một công việc nào đó.

Ví dụ
If Ireland has doubts (nghi ngờ) and rejects (từ chối) the deal, this could put a spanner in the works for the entire agreement (thỏa thuận).

While Thanos essentially (về cơ bản) brought the world to a standstill (bế tắc) when he killed half of all life on earth, Bruce Banner threw a spanner in the works by reversing (đảo ngược) the destruction (sự phá hoại), returning three billion people to a world that had essentially moved on.

Circus performer, Ettore Weber, mauled (hành hạ) to death by 4 tigers that 'played' with his body for 30 minutes after killing him. The circus had arrived in Bari on June 15 and was due to stay in the port city until July 14, but Weber's death has thrown a spanner in the works.

Brexit developments undoubtedly (rõ ràng) could throw a wrench in the works, though we still see a request (yêu cầu) for a further extension (mở rộng) of exit negotiations (đàm phán) in October as the most likely outcome.
