"Burn your bridges" nghĩa là gì?

'Burn one's bridges' = đốt cháy cây cầu của ai, thường dùng trong quân sự ngăn chặn sự theo đuổi của kẻ địch -> làm điều gì đó khiến nó không thể thực hiện, duy trì lại trong tương lai. Ví dụ như nghỉ việc hay chia tay một mối quan hệ theo một cách rất tồi tệ khiến bạn không thể giữ lại liên lạc hay kết nối trong tương lai nữa.
Ví dụ
Burning bridges can also give you a bad reputation (tiếng xấu). The way you conduct yourself and treat people will follow you everywhere you go. It is a smaller community than you realize and perception has a funny way of becoming reality.
You can say, “Don’t burn your bridges if you decide to leave your job. You may need a good reference (thư giới thiệu) from your former boss or you may need to come back to work for him or her one day. Always be nice. And always leave on a good note.”
You have just burned your bridge. You have destroyed (phá hủy) your relationship with that boss. If things do not work out with your new job, there is no way on earth your old boss will take you back. Ever. And you can also forget about any good recommendation (đề cử, giới thiệu).
