'Come to a pretty pass' = tới một con đèo rất đẹp, mà bạn biết 'đèo' đẹp thì nó ngoằn ngoèo hay như nào rồi đó (đang nói mỉa mai đó nha, đừng tin là nó đẹp) -> đối mặt hoặc bắt đầu bước vào một tình huống/tình thế khó khăn, rắc rối.

Ví dụ
We have come to a pretty pass when a Christian doctor is suspended (đình chỉ) because he would not call a chap (thằng cha, một từ nói mang hàm ý chửi hoặc bông đùa) with a beard (râu) a woman just because he has chosen to identify himself as female.

Things have come to a pretty pass in the seven-month confrontation between Ugandan security agencies and the country’s biggest telecom company, MTN. At mid-night on Thursday (Feb.14), the MTN Uganda chief executive was deported (trục xuất) from the country.

Things have come to a pretty pass when that prominent (xuất chúng) supporter of much that Labour wishes to achieve, the journalist and broadcaster Paul Mason, calls for the removal of Corbyn’s inner politburo (bộ chính trị), who have fomented (xúi giục) their leader’s worst Eurosceptical instincts, and achieved such an electoral disaster.
