"Fingers were made before forks" nghĩa là gì?

"Fingers were made before forks" = ngón tay có trước, dĩa có sau -> lời biện minh của người thích ăn bằng tay thay vì dĩa.

Ví dụ
Licking her greasy fingers (ngón tay dính đầy dầu mỡ) with much satisfaction, Nellie smirked (cười ngốc) and simply said, “Fingers were made before forks."

Some morsels (miếng nhỏ) of food just look like they should be picked up and eaten. And yet that’s not always appropriate (thích hợp) even if “fingers were made before forks.”

Irene put hers on a warm white plate she'd preheated (đã hâm nóng trước) in the oven. She ate hers with a knife and fork. Mary Ann tore (kéo, xé) at hers with her bare fingers. 'Fingers were made before forks,' she said, in her deadpan (vô tư, vô cảm) teenage voice which hardly ever went up or down.
