"A snake in one's bosom" (con rắn trong ngực ai đó) là thành ngữ dùng để miêu tả những người được (ai đó) xem là bạn, được quan tâm và chăm sóc nhưng hoá ra lại là một kẻ dối trá, vô ơn.

Ví dụ
“Japan has a snake in her bosom. That snake is namely flatterers (những kẻ tâng bốc/ xu nịnh). What led Japan to defeat is neither army nor government, but the snake in Japan’s bosom, the flatterers.”

Unlike some commentators who would want to believe that Opposition unity has been severely (dữ dội) jolted (làm choáng váng/ ngạc nhiên), we are of the view that Nitish Kumar’s departure is good riddance (sự giải thoát). Moreover, you cannot cement (thắt chặt/ làm gắn kết) a greater association with a snake in your bosom. The road ahead is clear to us, even if it is a long and tortuous (quanh co) one.

You know very well, O Sancho Panza, my neighbor and friend, how the proclamation (sự công bố) and edict (sắc lệnh) that His Majesty (đức vua/hoàng hậu) issues against those of my race brought terror (sự kinh hoàng) and fear to all of us…It seems to me it was divine (thần thánh/ thiêng liêng) inspiration (sự truyền cảm/cảm hứng) that moved His Majesty to put into effect so noble a resolution, not because all of us were guilty (có tội), for some were firm and true Christians, though these were so few they could not oppose those who were not, but because it is not a good idea to nurture a snake in your bosom or shelter (nơi ẩn náu/trú ẩn) enemies in your house.
