'The rub of the green' từ này bắt nguồn từ sân golf. 'Rub' là hướng cỏ sau khi cắt ảnh hưởng tới hướng lăn của bóng, ngoài ra từ 'rub' cũng có nghĩa 'chỗ đất gồ ghề' (dễ làm chệch đường đi của bóng) -> lời chúc may mắn trong thể thao.

Ví dụ
"We did create many chances but we just didn't get the rub of the green you need when you go to a place like Seaview," he said.

“It’s nice to have hit the ground running this season. I think it took me six games to get off the mark last term. What’s the difference between this season and the previous campaign? I don’t really know the answer to that one to tell you the truth. It’s just a case of the rub of the green going my way really.

Sometimes - actually, much of the time - it is simply not your day. The rub of the green does not go your way, the opposition (đối diện, phe đối lập) turns up and plays an absolute blinder. The All Blacks won the past two World Cups when things went their way. Have they just used up their cup of good fortune?

It is a fact of sporting life that the glory (vinh quang) teams sometimes get the rub of the green simply because officials are subliminally intimidated by the aura (khí chất) that surrounds teams like the All Blacks, Barcelona and Manchester United. It is this thinking that has had the rugby world swearing that the imperious Richie McCaw got away with murder every time he took the field simply because... he was Richie McCaw.
