"Children should be seen and not heard" = trẻ em chỉ nên xuất hiện và không nên lên tiếng (đặc biệt khi có người lớn). Thường sử dụng để quở trách đứa trẻ không nên nói điều không nên.

Ví dụ
When I was a little girl, “Children should be seen, not heard” was a proverb that was put into practice. In fact, in many homes, an amended (sửa đổi) version of the directive was enforced — in the presence of a visitor, children were not to be seen either!

The old saying of ‘Children should be seen and not heard’ should be turned on its head. We need to look from the inside out and not the outside in. By this I mean to be guided by children and adolescents (thanh thiếu niên) on how best adults can help them.

When I was young, I was taught that children should be seen and not heard. I didn’t like being silenced much then any more than I do now. Thus I am cheered, and a bit inspired, by some of the youth in this country and elsewhere who have stepped forward to confront (đối đầu) what they see as problems despite the insults (xúc phạm) of adults who feel threatened.
