Deuterostome nghĩa là miệng thứ sinh, hậu khẩu.

The discovery (phát hiện, khám phá) in China of 540 million-year-old Saccorhytus coronaries (hình vành) fossils (hóa thạch)—creatures (động vật) with a gaping mouth flanked by eight small openings—may represent the earliest known deuterostome, scientists reported today (January 30) in Nature.

To explore the genetic underpinnings of these features, and to better understand the evolution of the deuterostomes, the authors performed high-definition genomic sequencing of the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus (also known as the Japanese sea cucumber), covering about 92% of its estimated 880 megabases of DNA, including more than 30,000 genes.

Deuterostomes constitute a superphylum (phân loại trên phạm vi siêu lớn, siêu ngành) of animals, which includes myriad (mười nghìn, vạn, vô số) groups, from humans to starfish (sao biển). “All deuterostomes had a common ancestor (tổ tiên chung), and we think that is what we are looking at here,” coauthor Simon Conway Morris, an evolutionary paleobiologist (nhà nghiên cứu sinh học tiền sử) at the University of Cambridge, said in a press release. “These findings suggest that a key step in deuterostome evolution was the development of lateral openings that subsequently were co-opted as pharyngeal (họng, hầu) gills (mang (cá), yếm (gà)).”

Humans are deuterostomes, which means that when they develop in the womb the anus forms before any other opening. Which basically means at one point you were nothing but an asshole. Some people never develop beyond this stage. :)))
