"Ordeal by fire" nghĩa là gì?

"Ordeal by fire" = Thử thách bằng lửa -> Theo (sử học) cách thử tội (bắt tội nhân nhúng tay vào nước sôi hoặc lửa...) với niềm tin rằng Chúa/ông trời sẽ giải cứu họ nếu họ thực sự vô tội.

Ví dụ

"The entire country and the world know that Sita was kept in Ashok Vatika in Sri Lanka, where she had to go through 'Agni Pariksha' (ordeal by fire).

THERE’S a curious old legend (huyền thoại cổ đại hiếu kỳ, kỳ lạ) about how Queen Emma, who was the wife of King Canute, made Wargrave Manor a present to the Winchester Bishopric after she survived a royal (thuộc hoàng gia) ordeal by fire there. Canute, who was her second husband, had died some years earlier and Emma was accused by the Archbishop of Canterbury of an amorous (đa tình, say đắm) relationship with the Bishop (giám mục) of Winchester. To prove her innocence (chứng minh sự vô tội), she had to walk over nine red hot ploughshares (lưỡi cày nóng), a trial which she survived and which was captured in a well-known painting by William Blake.
