Contrary to popular belief, pregnant women don't need to eat for two, and new research shows messages like this can help women stay healthier during pregnancy.

WOMEN who ‘eat for two’ during pregnancy risk becoming overweight (thừa cân) for life, new research has warned. While it is healthy for mothers-to-be to put on some weight, doctors say an increasing number pile on too many pounds. Scientists have found that doing so could ‘reprogram’ a woman’s body to automatically lay down more fat in middle age (tuổi trung niên).

“Although, increased caloric intake (nạp, hấp thụ) is needed in pregnancy, you are not necessarily ‘eating for two,’ McPherson said. “For most women, no additional calories are needed in the first trimester (kỳ ba tháng đầu tiên). For the second trimester, an average of 340 kcal/day is appropriate and for the third trimester, an average of 450 kcal/day is appropriate. These additional calories should come from nutrient-dense foods (thức ăn giàu dinh dưỡng) such as fruits, vegetables, nuts/nut butters, yogurt. It is best to avoid empty calories from sodas, fried foods, high-fat meats, and high sugar foods.”
