"Head on the block" có từ "block" ở đây là cái thớt để chặt đầu -> liều lĩnh làm một việc gì đó để giúp ai đó hoặc đạt mục đích của mình.

Ví dụ
I am going to put my head on the block and say that Mr Hatoyama will be gone before the summer is out.

Lt Gen (trung tướng) Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama came in while I was completing my Junior Certificate. His ascendency (uy thế) came with so much excitement and hope, especially among old folks (người quen/bạn bè cũ/người nhiều tuổi). When the world was hit by recession (suy thoái) in 2008 international organisations put pressure on Botswana to cut down in labour force. Khama stood firm and put his head on the block and flatly refused to accede (tham gia).

“The story of historic abuse in this country is appalling (kinh khủng),” says Merrington. “That’s the failures of all sorts of institutions. You just think why didn’t they believe us? Where are we now? I read that there were 23,000 cases of child abuse (bạo hành trẻ em) last year. How much more can we do? The law needs changing. My feelings are not for myself, they are for Dean Radford and the other boys. They need redress (bồi thường). Dean put his head on the block and suffered consequences. He might not have made it as a top player but, in life, he is a top man. He went where most men wouldn’t.
