"Like the dickens" là hình thức nhấn mạnh, được dùng trong trường hợp ai đó nỗ lực hết sức làm việc gì.

Ví dụ
“We’re going to fight like the dickens. We’re leaving nobody behind, but if you don’t come and show up and they don’t see a real person is behind this — a family that’s going to be hurting — then we’re not going to have any success whatsoever. You’ve got to put the pressure on.”

“Jim made a lot of coaches in our league get busy to work like the dickens to try and beat him," legendary (huyền thoại) North coach Vic McIntyre said after Chapman exited South in 1982. "That’s what you want to accomplish (thực hiện) as a coach. That’s a great testimony (bằng chứng, chứng nhận) when other coaches have to work hard to beat you.”

The first kind is what I'll call sudden anger. It's not logical at all, it's always abrupt (bất ngờ), and it's perhaps even a little out of control. When you stub your toe (vấp ngón chân) on the way to the bathroom in the morning and it hurts like the dickens, that's sudden anger. No one has hurt you, there is no subtlety and no conflict. Your toe hurts and you respond--ouch! That type of anger will subside after a few minutes and you'll go back to your normal mood.
