"Cut off with a shilling" nghĩa là gì?

"Cut off with a shilling" = cắt đứt bằng một shilling (1/20 của một pound) -> bị cắt quyền thừa kế (có chủ đích) bằng việc cho một shilling. Cụm này thường được sử dụng ở Anh.
Ví dụ
A man cannot cut his wife off with a shilling.
Why, they would cut her off with a shilling and we should be next door to penniless.
It used to be a frequent theme (chủ đề) in novels about family life: “I’ll cut you off with a shilling, young man!” cried the paterfamilias (gia trưởng; cha), or the uncle or aunt. Young sprogs (đứa trẻ) had to be nice to their elderly relatives, and show respect – else they might not be beneficiaries (thừa hưởng) of the old bean’s will (di chúc).
