"Take the starch out of (one)" = Lấy hết sức mạnh/nghị lực của ai -> Làm nhục ai, làm bớt cái tôi và tính kiêu ngạo của ai, làm ai trở nên thấp kém.

Ví dụ
TNT roared back from a nine-point deficit (số tiền thiếu hụt) early in the third period to detonate (làm nổ) two bombs of 9-0 and 10-0 to take the starch out of Ginebra.

As fate would have it, they drew adjacent (gần kề) stalls, and the possibility for a screaming pace looms large. If they take the starch out of each other, Bal Harbour (2) and/or True Timber (11) will be in a position to capitalize (lợi dụng, dùng làm vốn).

Truman never got over his anger at the AMA. He once wrote to a congressman (nghị sĩ) that “At the proper time, we will take the starch out of them.” His efforts toward health care weren’t completely for nothing however, because in 1946 the Hill-Burton act provided federal funds to build hospitals.
