...A solar year — the time it takes Earth to orbit the sun — lasts around 365 days, while a lunar year, or 12 full cycles of the Moon, is roughly 354 days. To correct for seasonal drift (sai lệch theo mùa), the Chinese, Hindu, Jewish and many other calendars are lunisolar (âm lịch). In these calendars, a month is still defined by the moon, but an extra month is added periodically to stay close to the solar year.

...In the context of history, staying connected to an alternative calendar can also be a form of resisting the mainstream (chủ lưu/dòng chính), or maintaining an identity outside of it. When a calendar is imposed (áp đặt) on a society (lên toàn xã hội), it usually has to do with politics (chính trị) and power (quyền lực). The ability “to say when the year will start, or decide that a religious festival should be celebrated at a particular time, can be quite useful (có ích) for a politician (chính trị gia),” Dr. Stern said.

The Gregorian calendar has only been used as a global standard for about a century, and is “very much a reflection of European commerce and colonialism (chủ nghĩa thực dân),” Dr. Birth said. It has now been built into computer architecture, but that doesn’t mean another calendar couldn’t one day become dominant.

"Read 'em and weep" nghĩa là gì?

Tiền có kiếm như nước rồi cũng sẽ trôi hết, Tay không trắng tay lại về không? Photo by Analise Benevides on Unsplash.

'Read 'em and weep' = read it and weep = đọc và khóc đi -> nghĩa là nghe/biết tin dữ/tin xấu; (trong chơi bài bạc) nhìn kết quả và mếu đi, mày thua/tao thắng rồi.

Ví dụ
Read it and weep — a nurse's memoir about life in the NHS.

Statistics can be massaged and misleading, but there’s no debating the enormity of the Colts’ proclivity (tuyên bố) for making things much harder than they need to be. In the influential takeaway-giveaway category, read ‘em and weep: the Colts are a minus-3 in turnovers (10 takeaways, 13 giveaways), and a league-worst and staggering minus-34 differential in points scored off turnovers.

Want to know what Mark Zuckerberg and his underlings really think about us users? Get ready to read ’em and weep: against the wishes of the Facebook CEO, the UK parliament’s inquiry into fake news has published confidential (tối mật) correspondence (văn thư, trao đổi) between Zuck and his staff. That correspondence has some revealing stuff in it.

You don’t need to be obnoxious (đáng ghét, khả ố) but you need to be prepared to talk about your business. As Brittany Hearst, author of the best-selling book “Influencer” and a mega-influencer in her own right said: “If you're not telling your own story, someone else will tell it for you.” So, it’s entirely up to you — control the dialog or read it and weep.

"Window shopping" nghĩa là gì?

chỉ lượn thôi, Photo by Joshua Rawson-Harris on Unsplash.

'Window shopping' nghĩa là (hành động) lượn lờ các cửa hàng/cửa hiệu, hoặc nhìn qua cửa sổ các cửa hàng đó, xem có gì hay nhưng không mua gì cả.

Ví dụ
Brendan Rodgers frustrated by Celtic's lack of window shopping.

If you've never heard of this wellness center it's likely because Albers is following Herbalife rules, which don't allow her to advertise her product or store; she cannot publically announce costs of the product and; there can be no window shopping. The rules state that people cannot be able to look into the business, which is why you'll notice shades drawn all the time.

Not surprisingly, 82% of consumers compare or track prices when shopping. But an equal number now leverage search engines such as Google Shopping as do window shopping or shop in stores. And more believe that they get better deals when doing so — 36% compared to 28% who physically visit stores. Consumers are largely impulsive (bốc đồng) when they do track prices — almost half will make their purchase decision within a week, while the remainder wait on average about three weeks to make a decision.
