The cartoon (biếm họa, hoạt hình), published in Jyllands-Posten on Monday, depicted a Chinese flag (cờ, quốc kì) with the yellow stars (ngôi sao vàng) normally (thông thường) found in the upper left corner (góc trên bên trái) exchanged for drawings of the new coronavirus.
China's embassy in Denmark called the cartoon "an insult (xúc phạm, sỉ nhục) to China" that "hurts the feelings of the Chinese people".
The embassy said the cartoon crossed (vượt qua lằn ranh) the "ethical (đạo đức) boundary of free speech (tự do ngôn luận)" and demanded that the paper and cartoonist Niels Bo Bojesen "reproach (tự khiển trách) themselves for their mistake (lỗi lầm) and publicly apologise (xin lỗi công khai) to the Chinese people".
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said freedom of expression in Denmark includes cartoons.
